In today's competitive marketplace, brands are constantly seeking innovative ways to stand out and create memorable experiences for their consumers. While words and visuals have long been the traditional tools for conveying a brand’s narrative, tactile and olfactory experiences offers a unique and powerful medium to communicate a brand's history, mission, and vision. Thus multi-sensory branding, which involves engaging multiple senses during the instore experience or brand interactions, can help to enhance brand perception and create lasting impressions. Integrating scent with visual, audio, and textural elements can elevate the brand experience to new heights, fostering deeper emotional connections with customers. Here’s how multi-sensory branding can be achieved and why it’s so effective.
Full Immersion Through the Five Senses
Engaging all five senses allows brands to create fully immersive experiences that captivate and engage consumers on multiple levels. Here’s how each sense contributes to this immersive experience:
-
Sight
Visual elements like color, design, and lighting create the initial impact and set the tone for the brand experience. They can convey brand values, aesthetics, and identity at a glance and are usually the crucial first impression of the brand.
-
Sound
Audio elements, including music, soundscapes, and even the tone of voice in communications, can evoke emotions and reinforce brand messaging. They set the atmosphere and enhance the brand’s messaging on an emotional level.
-
Smell
Scent has a direct connection to memory and emotion, making it a powerful tool for creating lasting impressions. It can evoke specific feelings, memories, and associations that strengthen the brand narrative.
-
Touch
Textural elements, from product packaging to in-store displays, can enhance the tactile experience and make interactions more engaging and enjoyable. They add a tangible dimension to the brand experience.
-
Taste
In relevant industries, taste can create a direct and powerful connection to the brand. In fact, our flavor experiences are often heavily influenced by scent, with about 80% of what we perceive as taste coming from what we smell. This is why when you have a blocked nose or when you’re on a plane and your olfactory senses are dulled, food tastes much less appetizing and bland. Thus taste can enhance the sensory experience and create a deeper emotional bond with consumers.
The Power of Multi-Sensory Branding
Engaging the five senses—sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste—allows brands to create a full-immersion experience that can significantly impact consumer behavior and perception. When multiple senses are engaged simultaneously, the brand experience becomes more vivid, memorable, and emotionally resonant.
Strategies for Integrating Scent into Multi-Sensory Branding
Here are some ways you can pair scent with other sensory elements to better reinforce your brand image and values.
-
Scent and Visuals
Combining scents with visual elements can enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of a brand. The scents can reinforce the style and setting of the location. For instance, a high-end boutique might diffuse a custom powdery floral scent that matches the color palette and decor of the store, reinforcing the brand’s luxurious image.
Example: Muji, a retail store with a minimalist and an emphasis on natural designs, scent up their store front with essential oils that have a calming and woody scent such as that creating a cohesive and relaxing atmosphere.
-
Scent and Audio
Pairing scent with music or other audio elements can create a more immersive and emotionally engaging environment especially if visuals are not a focal point. The right combination of sound and smell can transport consumers to different settings or evoke specific memories and emotions.
Example: A spa might play soothing nature sounds such as running water or birds chirping while diffusing essential oils like eucalyptus and chamomile, enhancing the relaxation experience for clients.
-
Scent and Texture
Integrating scent with textural elements can enhance the tactile experience and create a more multi-dimensional brand interaction. This can be particularly effective in product packaging and in-store displays.
Example: Woosa, a mattress store founded in Singapore, is another collaborator with Scent Journer and their mattress showroom uses a calming earthy eucalyptus and patchouli blend that relaxes the senses and invokes a sense of calm and serenity allowing you to fully enjoy the various mattress textures.
-
Scent and Taste
In the food and beverage industry, combining scent with taste can elevate the dining experience and create a more memorable flavor profile.
Example: Nesuto, a Singapore-based Patisserie specializing in cakes and sweets, worked with Scent Journer to create a bespoke green tea and chestnut fragrance with other notes of citrusy neroli and ylang ylang that evoke a sense of cozy autumn calm for use in their Jewel storefront, thus creating a more immersive and cozy dining experience.
A Multisensory Experience Done Right
The best in-store experiences are the ones that find ways to incorporate and engage as many of the senses as possible. This time, we will analyze one of our clients: Woosa.
Sight
The showroom has pristine white beds lining the circumference, however unlike a typical factory-like grey showroom (imagine Expo event halls), Woosa takes on a more Japandi style and color scheme with a neutral color palette, natural themes, and a minimalistic space. They use curved walls and cloth partitions to section out the space and spotlights with warm lighting to highlight certain areas while leaving other areas, such as those directly above the bed, dimmer, and thus more cozy without being overly bright. Coupled with the high ceiling, the rounded space feels cozy yet spacious, creating a freely flowing space that's soft, relaxed, and serene, just like how one’s dreams would be. The use of clean colors and muted pastel shades add to the soft, clean look of the entire space.
Sound
Throughout the showroom, gentle music is playing through the speakers. Some nature sounds were also added in, playing into that whimsical imagery.
Tactile
Upon entering Woosa’s showroom ‘The Dreamery’, you will be made to remove your shoes and you will step on a plush carpet that immediately makes you feel like you are stepping on a cloud and is just the first step in transporting you into a sleepy dreamland. Taking off your shoes and feeling the soft carpet beneath you builds the image of an intimate personal space such as the bedroom.
Scent
Woosa uses a bespoke fragrance customized with Scent Journer and diffuses it throughout the entire showroom using two of Scent Journer’s commercial-sized diffusers. The scent encompasses Woosa’s ambiance and color scheme into a relaxing eucalyptus scent with earthy notes of fresh rain, wet earth, patchouli, and moss that create a natural scent reminiscent of those sleepy, cold rainy nights.
Thus you can see how Woosa has created a fully immersive, multisensory experience that transports their customers into a sleepy cloud-like dreamland, allowing them to fully immerse themselves into the experience of their mattresses and imagine their night of perfect sleep.
