Tonka bean has a gourmand sweet tobacco scent with almondy facet. The absolute is employed as a fixative and fragrance component in oriental, new mown hay and chypre-type perfumes. It is no longer used as a flavouring though it is still used to flavour tobacco.

Tonka beans contain coumarin which provides the cocooning warmth resembling the scent of vanilla.

HOW IS IT EXTRACTED?
Tonka bean absolute is obtained by soaking Tonka beans in rum for almost a day. The next day, the beans are dried and the white crystals of coumarin start appearing on the surface of the beans. Coumarin, first discovered in 1868, is the substance responsible for the aroma of tonka bean, whose scent intensifies during essential oil extraction.
