The Art of Perfume Layering

Perfume layering is nothing short of an art form that is greatly underrepresented and underutilized in the fragrance world. This technique, often used by fragrance enthusiasts and industry professionals, can enhance the longevity and complexity of your scent. Whether you're new to the world of perfumes or a seasoned connoisseur, understanding the art of perfume layering can transform your fragrance experience and bring your olfactory senses on a journey like none other.

What is Perfume Layering?

Perfume layering allows you to create a unique, personalized scent by combining multiple fragrances whether it be in the form of perfumes, body soap, or lotions. By carefully selecting and combining fragrances, you can highlight different notes, create depth, and enhance the overall fragrance experience. This method allows you to customize your scent profile, making it distinctly yours.

Benefits of Perfume Layering

  • Personalisation
Mixing two unique fragrances can allow your scent to be further customized to suit your preferences and personality.

  • Enhanced Longevity
Layering similar fragrances in different forms such as lotions, soaps, and perfumes can help enhance your scent and boost the longevity of your chosen fragrance.

  • Greater Versitility
You can easily adapt your favorite fragrances for different occasions by pairing them with different fragrances and thus changing the overall scent profile.

Perfume Layering 101: How to Effectively Layer Your Perfumes

  1. Understanding What is in Your Perfume

Before you start layering, it's essential to understand the notes in each of your perfumes. This allows you to select fragrances that have notes that best complement each other and minimize any clashing scents.

As a general rule of thumb, you can start layering with fragrances in the same fragrance family. Florals with Florals, Woody with Woody. Once you get more comfortable with layering, you can start experimenting with different scents from different families. For example, an ambery scent like vanilla goes well with a woody smell like sandalwood while bright citrus notes like neroli can add brightness to fresh floral scents like rose.

  2. Use Different Products

Some brands expand their fragrance line past just perfumes into lotions and even body soap. This allows for ample layering opportunities of your favorite scents from the moment you bathe to the moment you apply your perfume. Each different product you use releases scent at its own pace. Vapors such as perfume sprays will be strong at first but fade faster than oils such as those in body lotion and soaps, which are milder in scent but persist for longer on the skin. Hence this ensures your chosen fragrance is gradually released and lasts throughout the day.

Moreover, applying a body lotion creates a hydrated base that retains the fragrance molecules longer, allowing the scent to linger throughout the day. The lotion works by creating a barrier on the skin, which slows down the evaporation process of the perfume. This barrier helps to lock in the fragrance, making it last longer and smell stronger.

Of course, you could also choose to use body soaps and lotion with different fragrances. This allows you to customize and mix fragrances of differing intensities and lasting powers, hence the overall scent evolution is more unique and lingering.

Alternatively, if you wish to mix perfumes without the fragrances in lotions or body soaps interfering, you could opt for unscented lotions and body soaps to allow your chosen perfumes to take the spotlight.

  1. Use the Same Concentration!

If layering perfumes it's important to not choose perfumes of the same concentrations such that one does not overwhelm the other. This means if you want to layer an Eau De Toilette (EDT) it's best to layer with another EDT and not an Eau De Parfum (EDP). The EDP will inevitably overwhelm the EDT due to the difference in perfume oil concentrations and you will not be able to smell the two together. Thus for the scents to harmonise and shine equally it is best to apply perfumes of similar concentrations.

  2. Apply the Heavier Fragrance First

‘Heavier’ scents are scents that have a pervasive and lingering base note such as vanilla, sandalwood, oud, musk, and cinnamon to name a few are best applied first when layering perfumes.  The Wood and Oriental (or Ambery) Olfactory families are typically heavier fragrances. It is best to apply these heavier fragrances first before applying lighter scents on top such as citruses and florals as this allows the heavier oils to absorb into the skin first before the lighter scents are spritzed and absorbed on top of it, preventing the heavier scents from completely masking the lighter scents

  3. Space Them Out
You could try spreading out your fragrances instead of spraying them directly on top of each other. For example, if you spray one fragrance on your wrist, you could spray the other fragrance on the inside of your elbow or the middle of your arm. This may work better for some perfumes as it gives each perfume the chance to shine individually with equal projection and blend as they evaporate.

  4. Less is More

When mixing perfumes, we suggest not mixing more than two or three perfumes at any one time. This is to prevent the scent from getting too muddy and with more fragrances, the higher the chance there is something that will clash and result in the whole fragrance smelling less than pleasant
