We source ingredients from ethical producers around the globe, with sustainable and energy-efficient harvesting processes. We are also proud to be a true Singaporean brand. Our production and formulation are done locally in Singapore, which reduces air miles, fuel consumption, and emissions.
Biodegradable ingredients
Scent Journer perfumes also contain high concentrations of biodegradable ingredients. For example, Dancing Blue Bees contain 94.1% biodegradable (organic) ingredients. The percentage of biodegradable (organic) is calculated by totaling the percentage of the ingredients which through screening of chemicals shows biodegradability of 70% (DOC) biodegradation within 28 days.
Are Synthetic ingredients used in perfume bad?
There are many different types of synthetic ingredients. Synthetic ingredients can be naturally derived from a molecule existing in nature, and they can also be created in a laboratory. These synthetic ingredients can improve the supply chain and make the fragrance more sustainable.Reducing carbon footprint- 100% Carbon renewable & Upcycled ingredients
Some examples of naturally derived molecules include beta-pinene, limonene and orange terp Citronova, they are used in A Starlit Spell and are 100% carbon renewable hence reducing carbon footprint.
Another example is the use of 100% upcycled eugenol in A Starlit Spell. The Eugenol is obtained from leaves which have fallen from the Clove tree and undergoes a series of chemical transformations, resulting in a variety of fascinating and natural molecules.
Ethically sourced naturals
Moreover, it is extremely challenging to create a fully natural sustainable perfume. This is because natural raw materials are scarce and more expensive because they can take many years to grow and goes through long processes before they can be distilled for perfumery usage. Such ingredients include vanilla and sandalwood which are often over-exploited. Hence synthetic recreation is more sustainable for the environment.
Hence, it is important at Scent Journer to source these natural ingredients responsibly and sustainably. Scent Journer’s latest launch, A Starlit Spell perfume contains 89% ethically sourced natural ingredients such as Damascena rose from Turkey, Vetiver from Haiti and sandalwood from Australia. These ethically sourced ingredients are not only good for the environment, it is also good for the community as it enable the next generation of producers of natural to be able to continue to harvest for tomorrow on what is ethically planted today. It helps to improve their livelihood and restore biodiversity at the same time.
Organic sugarcane alcohol
We also take pride in using organic sugarcane alcohol which is a more sustainable form, as typically, alcohol is derived from grain which requires starch to be converted to sugar before producing alcohol. With sugarcane, sugar is fermented straight to alcohol, reducing processes and making it more energy efficient. This also means that there is a reduction of CO2 emissions since sugarcane ethanol requires only a small amount of fossil fuels for its production. Moreover, the CO2 released from the burning of ethanol are reabsorbed by photosynthesis during the growth of sugarcane in the following season. Lastly, ethanol from sugarcane is essentially a renewable fuel and a great replacement for gasoline.
